British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of entry passages down to the site... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were a great many British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our security, shows how British military are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
